MY

THE STRAITJACKET

Our society looks at garments like the straitjacket as relics of an unenlightened and barbaric past.
By incorporating topical texts and images of oppression into seemingly archaic, adorned, and visually pleasing garments, I hope to evoke reflection on how people are denied fundamental human rights and body autonomy.
My artwork responds to this central hypocrisy. I want to show that these ideologies, that we claim to be historic, are alive and well - just in another form.

- A skirt made out of the state seals of the states' that have banned abortion, creating a bustle skirt. The state seal for Missouri adorns the throat, which had a total abortion ban, until voters passed Amendment 3, recognizing reproductive freedom,

- Fabric made out of the Heartbeat Act, Texas' anti-abortion legislation that directly challenged Roe V. Wade and laid ground for Dobbs.
- Pink chains to represent our gilded oppression.

- A skirt made out of wire coat hangers, representing the importance of safe and accessible abortion care.
- "Never Again," meaning we will never allow the return to shameful and hidden abortion care.

THE VENUS PROJECT
The Venus Project is a series of large-scale collage pieces that recreate iconic and historical interpretations of Venus, the goddess of beauty.
These works removes the eroticism and the male gaze from our interpretation of these goddesses of beauty, breathing new life into these classical paintings. This series questions what beauty really looks like, its’ facelessness, and its’ simplicity.
The figure is digitally painted, printed, and used to collage with. The backgrounds are collaged with specific images of things that make each individual models feel beautiful, whether that is: peonies, a sunset, playing volleyball, or hot red peppers.

THE QUILT

THE BEADED TAMPONS
The Quilt tells untold stories about reproductive health, through textiles, quilting, and fabric art — painting a full picture of reproductive rights in America.
Compiled from anonymously submitted stories, The Quilt aims to normalize and amplify the universal narrative surrounding reproductive rights, through the subjects of abortion, menstruation, birth control, misogyny in medicine, and sex education. Combined, these categories provide an outlet of expression, around issues that are extremely stigmatized and considered shameful. Many of these stories have never been told before. During this harrowing time, where we see the relentless attack of reproductive rights and freedom, The Quilt redefines how we see and understand the reproductive experience.

What is a "luxury item?"
This series is about the way our society approaches and treats menstruation. By beading tampons and displaying them in a sumptuous and extravagant way, these pieces play with the idea of making periods "luxurious". However, by beading tampons, they become unusable. This juxtaposition currently exists in our society, naming tampons "luxury items" while shaming and demeaning menstruation, the formation of 'period deserts,' and many menstruating people not being able to access care.
THE CORSET

How do we restrict ourselves?

The Anorexia and Eating Disorder corset features fabric on the front and back which are from the DSM, because these are diagnosable conditions, not style trends. The side panels are a mixture of measuring tape and diet/weight loss pills. The entire piece is adorned with Ex-Lax and weight loss pills in jewelry casings, as well as mirrors and chains. The ribbon is Disney princesses, showing how these expectations are encouraged and cultivated from childhoodBulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa The Anorexia and Eating Disorder Corset is Part One of the Cosmetic Beauty Corsets.
